It probably isn't the same on every vehicle, but on my Subaru, you open the storage compartment and take out the liner. The connection point is just laying there. You just, plug it in.
When I had a trailer hitch installed, they did that for the 4 pin connector. I tapped into the wires on the trailer hitch bundle. That way, if I ruined anything, I could just buy another one and replace it.
