Bleach is NOT a problem with taste or odor unless you use WAY too much.
You wouldn't want the vinegar taste in your water either. It is true the peroxide breaks down faster than bleach, but you have to use a LOT more of it.
And, pool granules have the same active ingredient as bleach (sodium hypochlorite.) There may be less issue with taste etc because people measure the granules more carefully.
Bleach has more sodium in it. There is definitely a difference in taste between bleach and the chlorine granules. I prefer the granules.
You are right, I forgot that pool granules are mostly calcium hypochlorite.
