We're rural and will never have a PO Box on the road. With Amazon using 'Smart Post', their hand off system to the PO, we are assured confusion and hit and miss deliveries, depending if they punt the package to the PO, which has become increasingly common. This. I love Prime and use it too much. But, this hand off to the USPS is a loser. They don't tell you they are going to do that and in many CG's I use, USPS doesn't deliver but UPS does. I never get my stuff. They refund me without issue but I want my stuff. Been in a contest with Amazon execs on this for 2 months. If I can opt out of the USPS, I'd be happy.

No,Amazon doesn't ship your order,but,yes,they or one of their suppliers have the product,wrap it and send it out for shipping. Yes,the boys in brown,I was one for a while one heck of a long time ago for a very short time,before I started delivering industrial laundry,do the flying and delivering or the guy that drives the mail truck down your street stopping at your house when he feels like it.

as this is being typed we have been camped in a small town in Eastern South Dakota for 6 weeks .... it takes a 42 mile round trip drive to get to the nearest town with a WalMart, Lowe's, large grocery store .... our Sportchassis gets about 9.5 mpg .... consequently we use the heck out of Amazon Prime .... granted, their prices may not be the very lowest but by the time we add in the cost of travel, paying state sales tax which isn't charged by Amazon, and free shipping we find they their service is invaluable .... when the order ships by UPS or FedEx, it usually arrives on the day projected when the order was placed .... when the order is shipped by FedEx/US Post Office it usually takes one extra day .... we are told that is due to the local Post Office having its operating hours reduced .... for us it is a program that we find worth the cost of membership

OK, I couldn't find the talk. It was given at Macalester University in MN and Walter Mondale was in the audience. The show was broadcast on a MN TV station.

I am not bringing up Politics in the post! I do not want to discuss politics in any way nor does it apply to the OP's post!!! I'm just using a name that may help you more computer literate people to find the talk I saw. The person doing the talk wrote a book on how this all works and it explains how things can get delivered to your door in such a fast way. I'm not promoting the book either. I'm just saying that whomever this man is he has done the research to answer the questions you are asking.

I heard a man give a talk once that said the reason this sort of stuff works so well is because the big shipping cooperation's like UPS are really the ones doing the work. You think you are buying from Amazon but they are really just the people handling you order and taking your money. UPS has a big giant facility somewhere that has it's own airport and 100's of acres of where houses. When you place your order with Amazon it instantly goes to them and the put it on the plane right away. There is no Amazon where house. I'll see if I can find the talk and post it here but, it may take me some time. The man who did the talk did it in a humorous way telling the story that the people in the funny little brown shorts (UPS shorts) are the ones doing everything.

I hate paying for shipping charges, so Amazon Prime doesn't interest me. I'm rarely in so much of a rush that I can't wait a couple days for free shipping. And like was posted Amazon doesn't always have the cheapest prices. I usually shop around and the free shipping is usually what tips the purchase in Amazon's favor.

I just read the fine print on same day delivery and was surprised to find that the $5.99 shipping charge applies to everything in your order -- not each item like with the $3.99 next day shipping. Again -- how do they do it?

I placed my order around 7:15am and it showed up at my house at 9:54pm. I am not sure who the carrier was because it does not say on the shipping label. However, it made it to Alexandria, VA from Lexington, KY in about fifteen hours. The delivery vehicle was a car with a magnetic sign on the door. It was too far down the driveway to make out what the sign said.

Im a prime user too - doesnt take many purchases to justify the cost of a prime membership.

prior to being prime members we RARELY paid for express shipping (didn't matter who we bought from)...but we still got hit w/ shipping charges, as Amazon Prime member we (largely) avoid shipping charges and get it faster TOO.

I have noticed that where Amazon used to beat everyones price, it seem their prices are creeping up - i still give the advantage to amazon - even if the price is the same, we usually save on the shipping & get it in 2 days.
