Yes people die of the flu every winter, but not in numbers that overload hospitals, which is the case right now
THIS is what it's all about. Flattening the curve to spare the hospitals and therefore more people's lives. We might all get it in the end - but if the contagion can be spread out we will be better off.
Yes, the flattening of the curve is the goal of the stay at home orders and social distancing. And, as you stated, will help us avoid overloading the hospitals all at once. It is probably the right thing to do.
The morbid reality is that it is not intended to stop the virus in it's tracks. Flattening of the curve means dealing with the virus over a longer period of time so that hospitals can deal with the extreme cases so nobody dies just because they could not be treated. Stay at home orders will not eliminate deaths from this virus.
In order to stop the virus in it's tracks far more drastic measures would have to be taken.
