How about draping the extension cord over the driver's side mirror and then past the door enroute to the outlet. That way you can't miss it, thus reminding yourself to disconnect it, prior to getting into the truck. Maybe get an orange extension cord too, for better visibility.
Glad you experienced nothing worse than a skinned-up cord and maybe a little bit of :o
