Bonehead move yesterday

I was pulling my new Thor 22e behind the house yesterday. I have to go between the corner of my garage and a bush. With my old 32' Winnie if I stayed close to the bush, I missed the garage. I guess this new one is wider because I caught the corner of the garage roof/gutter and gouged the side of my MH. It went thru the luan into the styrofoam. I don't think it went thru the inner wall. Where should I take it for repair? Since it's new I don't want to try a do it yoourself repair. When I look online at boat repairs, they always have access to both sides which I don't have. I was so upset, I couldn't get mad. I've even gone down my 1/2 mile drive trimming trees so they wouldn't scratch the top or sides and then I do this.:(
  • a body shop will make it look like new. usually a rv dealer subcontracts if out to a body shop. i had a close call with our gutter too. it happens. i have a checklist now for potential hazzards.
  • Do not be so hard on your self, the bush might have grown out some and that made you turn at the wrong angle in relation to the gutter, that happened to a friend of mine, he took out the gutter with the corner of his RV, it took us 3 weekends to repair the RV and one to repair the house, he took out the plants and bushes on that part of the driveway.

There are mobile RV and boat repair guys that do fiber glass and/or metal, look on line maybe you can call one and get an idea of how much greenbacks it is going to cost.

    Good luck.

  • We took our old unit back to the factory and let them do the job. They were MUCH less expensive than anywhere else we got quotes from, and when they were done, we couldn't tell that there was ever any damage.

They had the parts, tools and expertise to do the job fast and correctly.
  • When I got 7 new free tires from Michelin, the local tire installer tech ran the side door of my MH into a raised lift. :S

Local independent auto body shop repaired and repainted it nicely...about $600. Their "business expertise" is after all repairing and painting metal, fiberglass, etc. No reason to go to an "RV" dealer for repairs.
  • Thanks all for your comments and advice. It is somewhat comforting to hear that other people do stuff like this.
  • Did a similar bonehead and not only cut into the fiberglass on the side, I was pulling forward, kept going, and pulled the whole end cap off the fiver! $10,000 and a month later I was back on the road. Fortunately insurance paid most of it. A body shop did the fiberglass repair while a RV shop replaced the rear cap.
  • Well, it happened to me yesterday. I keep my MH in an enclosed building, and hold the overhead door down on one end with a concrete mixer on top of a 2x4 (keeps that end of the door from opening a bit which lets mice in). I always move the mixer before opening the door, but yesterday I forgot. I lifted the door which tipped the mixer over and next thing you know the mixer is bouncing gayily off the hood of my MH. Not only that, but it decided to proceed to the ground by way of the left fender. That was depressing.

So, to make things better, I drive home, pull the car in the garage, then open the door into a metal tool holder on the wall, scraping the paint off the side of the door.

I am just now getting over it.

I wouldn't play the lottery this week. Seriously, I'm cringing as I write this. I know how you feel.
  • I sold my Mountain Aire 2 weeks ago. I normally store it in a barn but had moved it to my daughter's place to remove all my "stuff". As I was pulling out for it's last drive I clipped a tree branch that caved in the top corner molding to the tune of $500.

Life. I'm guessing my damage would be in the $1-2K range, BUT, it's just metal and paint, so I'm touching it up and will never look at it again (right).
