I haven't done that, but as I age, I've found that I have to sing "Happy Birthday" to myself to remember my own name sometimes. So for the RV, I bought a Brother P-Touch label maker. It prints whatever you type on the keyboard onto adhesive-backed 1/2" white tape. Then I just peel off the backing. I stuck each thing I had to check before driving away, on a spring loaded clothes pin and keep them in the console. As I hook up, I attach the proper clothes pin to the sun visor. When I unhook, I put the clothes pin back in the console. If there's still a clothes pin on the visor when I'm ready to go, then I'm not ready to go. At most, it takes a couple of extra minutes, and I'm not dragging something behind me (other than the toad). Clothes pin for that, too.
