I fully understand that it's not possible to ever change the vehicles tow rating, given by the manufacturer. I'm simply wondering if there's something I can do to tow an additional 800 to 1000 pounds.

If your Explorer has a 2.0L engine then your out of luck - it's just too small for towing. An Explorer with a 3.5L V-6 engine has a base tow rating of only 2K but when a tow package is added, the rating jumps to 5K (per TrailerLife Tow Guide).
