I avoid the holidays when camping just for that reason. I've found the best camping times are weekdays during the fall/spring when both the K-12 crowd and the college students are in classes.
I do agree about the pigginess aspect. However, the slobs tend to be of all economic/educational lines. I've seen college students using a converted school bus pick up their site completely after a weekend shindig, and I've seen older couples just toss garbage out of their rig like it magically would disappear as soon as it exits the door. I've seen parents encourage their kids to litter saying, "people are paid just to pick their garbage up, so might as well make them work for a living", and I've seen parents meticulously pick up every single piece of plastic or paper nearby. Part of it is how people were raised... just visit a local Wal-Mart to see a microcosm of exactly this.
I do agree it is getting worse. Part of it is the fact that a lot of kids are not brought outdoors anywhere near as much as older generations were, so they just treat a SP as they do their local nightclub, strip mall, or dive bar, expecting some staff to clean up messes.
