I don't see a problem with leaving partially burned firewood in the firepit so long as it is completely out. The next camper will burn it.
We always emphasize to our kids that we have to leave the site in better shape trash wise than we found it. They already know to police the entire campsite while DW and I are getting everything packed up. We usually don't have a lot of trash around anyway because we also don't let them throw anything on the ground. Trash goes in a trash can/bag or in their pocket until they come to one. We even take a small bag with us when we hike to pick up trash we may run across on the trail.
