Ok I had my first blowout this camping trip. I am running 205/75/r14 Goodyear marathon. They are 4 years old now. I normally run them at 45psi. Should I go ahead and replace them all or can I get some more life out of them? Tread depth is almost new. Should I go back with Goodyear or another brand? Thanks Michael
I run this size on my TT, and I can tell you, the majority in this thread have no idea what they are talking about. They run their mouth before they run a search.
For years I've looked for better tires, bigger, higher load rating, even LT rated, and they DO NOT EXSIST in this size.
Go to a 15" wheel, and you also grow the OD of the tire. There is no lower profile 15" tire that retains a near identical OEM tire diameter.
You best bet is to replace all 4 tires, because 4 years is more than enough life for TT and tires. Stick with radials. Just understand tire blow outs can occur at any time, to anyone, running ANY TIRE. Higher load rating (as long as you were not exceeding or nearing load ratings previously) does not equate to fewer blow outs. Period.
I would run max cold PSI of 50 though, nothing less. Personally, I even run a little over 50 for longer, all interstate runs where I run 65-70mph all day.
The claimed industry standard says to run more than 50psi for extended high speed travel. I did this with my OEM bias ply China bombs for 3 seasons and never had an issue but I wasn't comfortable with their wear pattern. So as of late summer, I now run Carlisle Radial trail RH which are fairly new, thus have practically zero bad reports.
The Carlisle tires have been on the road about three years now. I bought the new ones in Florida, ran them up to Maine and back out to Utah with no issues. However, I never exceeded 60mph. I can't say the same for rigs passing me at 70plus.
