Another tire question

I'll stick with what the tire manufacturers say as it comes to wheel balance and radial runout. Some of them mark their tires to address those issues so, according to the tire engineers, it must make a difference how the tire is mounted, in relation to the valve stem.

Most "tire installers" who mount the tires have no idea what those marks mean.

That's because the valve hole on the wheel isn't consistently a mark for anything. It's usually randomly drilled.

Yeah, right!!! With all of the sophisticated equipment out there now making wheels, they just randomly drill a hole wherever they want to. If you believe that then you must deal with some very low quality products.

I know of no wheel manufacturer who uses the valve hole as the mark for high point, low point or whatever. I've been in the tire industry for over 40 years and have done consulting work for some wheel manufacturers.

The exception to that is that some vehicle manufacturers specify that the valve hole is supposed to be the wheel low point of runout. But there is no wheel manufacturer who has adopted this across the board (as far as I know.)

If you know of a wheel manufacturer that uses the valve hole for marking purposes, please identify them. Otherwise, I stand by what I wrote.

I suspect not many here have had the opportunity of mounting and balancing tires. Some of the tire build quality can be judged by out of roundness, side to side run out and the amount of weight required to balance the tire. Ask any good independent tire shop what they see. It might surprise you.

I've never known brands to have much effect on the ride of handling.
Newness, yes and the same for any vehicle, it seems.
I once exchanged the Michelins with GY's (both RV tires) on a coach that we had just purchased and the ride improved.
Last year, we replaced the GY's on our recent purchase and after having a blowout. Installed HERCULES truck tires and they felt somewhat better, as well, but no biggie, either way, if your coach is right, to begin with.
I ran a set of HERCULES around the country on our previous gas coach and liked them better than anything previous. Then again, how many ways is there to make a tire, for having DOT approval and for staying out of trouble and possible bankruptcy?
Story short, it's all about the money and in this case, you don't always get what you pay for.

At eight years old we replaced Michelin with Yokohama’s andareveryhappy. They ride better than the Michelin

Go with DrewE. We ran Class 8 trucks. You can groove Michelins 1X, re-cap 3X. Checking is allowed and can be measured.

For you switching from Michelin's to another brand.....have you noticed any change in ride or handling? Smoother or rougher ride?
