Anti-rattle device for hitch

I just got a CW ad today and one of the sale items is a Roadmaster anti rattle device to keep the draw bar tight in the receiver. It's kind of a fancy U-bolt. Doing some research online there are several manufacturers and designs from simple to elaborate. Has anyone tried any of these type devices and what are your opinions. Do they work? My utility trailer rattles badly and I tow it from Minnesota to Colorado a couple of times a year.
  • I have tried almost every Anti Rattle device on the market, most have been no good or so complicated and cumbersome that they are useless. Including the Roadmaster type, totally useless.
Until I found the one at Hitch Rider, another vote for the Hitch Vice

Their Hitch Vice is the best and easiest one I have come across and it really works.
  • I don't have a welder either. I looked on amazon and eBay and there are several types all doing basically the same as either welding a nut on the receiver or clamping like the Roadmaster. I tend to like the idea of the ones with bolts coming from 2 sides to stop slop both directions but clamping 1 way is probably sufficient most of the time.
  • I use a Hitch Vise when carrying my bike and it keeps the hitch absolutely ridgid. It is easy to install and remove also. I just finished carrying my bike from Michigan to Florida and back and it never moved at all. Without it the rack pivots from side to side and bounces up and down.

  • Drill and tap a 1/2 in hole in receiver, then tape that hole.Next screw a long threaded bolt with a nut on it into the tapped hole, run nut brown to side of receiver FINGER tight.Weld that nut to the recieiver. That gives you more threads because receiver is to thin and soft to hold.I did this with two on one side and two on bottom.I also made shims for top and side.I also made shims for every place a bolt went thru on the ball platform.I used grade 8 bolts. After a few trips I will add a little metal where the bolts wear.(after a trip to Yellerstone from Ga,or a trip to Brownsville Tx)I have my welder and torch.

WTH? Won't let you get another toy? Now that stinks! :(
  • Amazon.com has several anti-rattle devices.

(for some reason I can't make a link to the site)

  • Works great, but what also works is a Grade 8 nut welded to the receiver, obviously over a new drilled hole, and a Grade 8 bolt tightened through the nut onto the ball adapter plugged into the receiver. This is a welding shop standard mod.
