For 126,000 miles we pulled a cargo trailer weighing with contents a little over 4K with our 2004 Sprinter Itasca, 5 cylinder engine . . No problem . We work craft shows all thru the south including mountains in the Carolinas . We would still be driving it except it got struck by lightning . Also a friend hauls a 24 foot trailer that he sells redneck belts out of with a 2003 Sprinter . The towing capacity that is written on the wall would not support these weights but It does not seem to hurt the sprinter . If you should have a serious accident a jury of your peers might have a problem with the over weight .
