I know you don't want to hear this, but strictly and legally speaking, that is EXACTLY what you should let them do. Let them take up the issue of damages with the owners after the fact. By giving them ANY direction you have just made yourself and the CG owner(s) culpable. "I was just doing what he/she told me to do".
Obviously, if you don't "work" for the CG, you can back 'em into a telephone pole with abandon! :)
