noplace2 I'm sure as we gain more experience we will have more to share, but hopefully we won't see any dead people! This was our first summer as on site volunteers, mostly we just do it on a daily basis since we live nearby. Life may get more exciting though. Just found out we've been accepted to camp host next Fall in a national park!
Welcome to this wacky world. We wish you all the best and offer a few paltry pieces of advice:
1) Do a good job but don't take it or yourselves too seriously. Presumably you went this route to have fun and enjoy life. NEVER lose sight of those goals. If, on a succession of days, you've found that you have lost that spirit, time to move on.
2) Laugh at yourselves and the plethora of "unique" individuals with whom you will cross paths. You can consider them a huge burden or special entertainment. We prefer the latter view. (OK, there have been days when homicide has skirted my mind, but I refrained). :)
3) We have had the pleasure over the years of being associated with several NP's. If you're in any way interested in committing to a 3-6 month season working 30-40 hrs/week, by all means look into the various "associations" run in concordance with the NP's. They typically run bookstores and the like within the parks. For example, we ran 2 bookstores in Grand Canyon NP for 2 amazing summers. Getting paid to sit 1200' from the rim? Can't begin to describe the experience.
Happy Holidays
