I would never use a debit card at a gas pump. Even if you have the VISA/MC backed ones, your account can be drained and it still takes a while to get the money reinstated. I have had my cc compromised at two different gas stations, one was a Valero and the other a Loves. Since it was a cc no problem other than the inconvenience of getting another card delivered.
I always contact my bank and card companies when I travel to let them know charges may come from areas outside my normal range. I consider this an easy and necessary part of trip planning. I have the apps for all and my mobile number is set to receive notices.
