I only get gas from Shell or Chevron. I have both of their cards and have never had a problem traveling different states. Went to Arizona from Wa state and back and no issues at all from either Shell or Chevron.
At Chevron stations, they usually offer up to .10/gallon discount using their CC or the same as 'cash'. Plus, my Chevron card gives me an additional .04/gallon discount on the billing.
Don't know why they cut off your card by going out of state, but that's not happened to me using a company gas card.
