our family has the pen fed credit card with fuel rebate. swipe at the pump and at the end of the month we get a credit of 5% of fuel purchases applied to the balance. so we get the rebate every month, no hassle. combine that with the Kroger fuel points makes a difference. To get the 5% you MUST swipe at the pump, not go inside. I've never had an issue with the card even when we used it multiple times at the same station same time, although we never use it more than twice at a given station. Never have called to let them know we were traveling, just enter zip code and purchase gets approved.
they give lower rebates on other purchases, but we only use the pen fed card for fuel purchases. Have other cards that are better for other rebates.
We are what the card companies call "credit card deadbeats" pay the balance every month and get the rewards.
Hmmmm ... 5% of fuel purchases applied to the balance is different than the PenFed credit card we have had for years.
Our PenFed card givens 5% off on gas, 3% off on groceries, and 1% off on everything else. PenFed recently also changed their policies for at least this card - such that we can go on RV trips to multiple states and not have to call them ahead of time to let them know what states we will be traveling in.
However, our PenFed card policy does not allow direct crediting of the rebates to my credit card account. I must call in or use their website periodically to get our rebates through requesting a VISA gift card that's set at the limit of the $$ credits I want used at the time that I request the gift card. I do this once or twice a year and have them send me a new VISA gift card worth hundreds of dollars to use anywhere just like a regular VISA credit card accept that the charges on it are free up to the limit of the gift card amount.
1%/3%/5% purchase credits really add up fast - since we put a lot of our daily expenditures on this card on purpose so as to get high limit gift cards a couple of times a year. We rarely use cash anymore because it's too expensive to use cash.
Basically, all of our RV trip gas is 5% cheaper everywhere and anywhere that we can gas up using our regular PenFed credit card. As an example, when regular gas is $3.00 per gallon at a station when on a trip, we're actually paying $2.85 per gallon for that gas.
Pen fed may have changed policies for newer members. We've had the card for over 15 years, so we may be grandfathered. We get the 5% credit every month applied to the balance. All we use it for is gas since the rebate for other purchases vary between 1% and 3%. We use another card for everything else since it's benefits are better for other than gas.
