A debit card can be used until cut off but the money is gone until you go through whatever hoops the issuing institution requires.
I am glad they were quick for you but being your checking account is involved it could have caused automatic payments and other charges to be denied resulting in fees which would also have to be sorted out. Then there would be the additional calls to the denied parties and sorting out that mess. If for any reason they were to have questioned the situation then you would not have been so lucky.
I am not trying to change your mind, whatever works for you is okay by me. I just point out the possibilities.
The debit card issues have really been over played. As long as you monitor your accounts this cascading scenario rarely happens. Your risk the the time period between when you catch it and the actual fraud. And even then easy to fix.
