Any problems with plugged tires

Plug in the tread or sidewall? If sidewall, I'd replace the tire. In the tread, I'd use it until it needed replaced just like the rest of the tires.

Opinions will differe and YMMV.

I have not found the leak yet, but I am assuming it is in the tread. If it is a problem with the sidewall, I plan on replacing the tire.

Plugs for temporary patch only in tire tread. Use patch on the inside of tire.
No repairs in sidewall area.

I'd either plug it or have it patched on the inside. Then I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes worn out.

patched from the inside your good to travel, don,t let them just plug it. and while your looking for that leak check the rubber insert for leaks , there known for rotting away.

With some tires it is also practical and safe to insert a tube in a "tubeless" tire and continue use it for many thousands of miles. I have done that where I could not get a airtight seal between the bead and the rim and not had any problems.

Ok- sidewall vs tread argument aside...(yes, do not plug the sidewall)

During my somewhat broke college years, I had a few plugs...

...and it seemed that 6 or 12 months later the plug would become a slow leak.

Consequently, I tend to swear off plugs- and say "patch" ALWAYS!

Of course in an 'emergency' / time-sensitive situation, a plug might be the ticket.

Having worked in a tire shop, I've seen many slow leaks from plugged tires. If it needs repair, I much prefer an "umbrella" patch that is a combination of inside patch and plug all in one. And if the leak is even close to the shoulder or sidewall, replace the tire.

If you have steel wheels check the rim too. I have had the broken wheels which is a pin hole leak at a weld. It wasn't the tire. Aluminum mag rims don't seem to be an issue. Just covering all your bases. Oh by the way, Inside patch. I worked service stations in the day of lub bays and full service bays. We would not plug. Maybe tires are better now but plugs are not a perfect fix.

It's often harder to find a shop to plug tires now a days. My father comes from the plug the tires generation and will pick it everytime if he can and its feasible.

On that note a few years ago we head something stick into the tire of our f250 we had. The truck had less than a 1000 miles. Discount Tire actually plugged it. And we never had any problems from it.
