Anyone been in a Japanese RV?

I've seen pictures of RV's from Japanese companies like Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Nissan. They look quite compact, but I hear they are quite full-featured (by Japanese standards). Just wondering if anyone can share experiences or more info.

They are quite small, but have everything you need. Japanese are used to compact so it fits their needs. They have some cool camping areas as well, such as Three Peaks which I hiked last month. I went in one a few years ago on Okinawa, there nice, would take Americans some time to get used to it.

Small with all the basics is exactly what I'm looking for. I found a website that exports them, but I wonder if they're legal to drive here ( especially since the driver sits on the right side)

Also I have seen several American 5th wheels over here that they use as a house. A garden business uses a old Aistream as their office a few miles down the road.

There is one RV parked near where I work, makes me miss camping with the family.

Currently living in Japan again (third time)

  • I think their market would be a world market, not just the U.S. If you look at most of the heavy equipment in the construction industry today it is Korean and Japanese. Now Japanese does not mean cheap, but it could mean high quality.

And I'd be very curious about the quality of their units.

I would assume the quality would be solid, since Japan, like Germany, is known for excellent engineering and reliable products.
  • The market is not big enough to attract the Japanese into the large DP class A motorhome industry. They insist on mass production operations, using robotic equipment for most of the construction.
But, if you're only looking at smaller RV units which might sell worldwide, then IMO you're on the right trail.
  • I hope this thread gets some participation as I would also like to know.
