I keep moving this around in my glove box. the batteries are dead, but back in the day it worked as designed.This was pre-modern day GPS. thought some of you may appreciate it. what you did was put in the general start area and the destination, it would tell you via text where to get off and how far, along with various stops along the way, you can see the buttons to input what you want. back in the day you could send it in for an update like a GPS. worked pretty good considering how limited it was.

Used to see them for sale in truck stops....many years ago.

Yes,I had 2 of them.I had the one you show first.Then they came out with another model geared toward campers and I got that.They were good in the day.

Yes, received one as a gift. I think it could have actually had value for some people. But I have never been much of a GPS type person, or even a cell phone person for that matter. We had this early device but never once used it. I am on my second Garmin. I used my new Garmin twice in the year I have had it.My son just got a new smart phone, and he was able to download the ability to use the phone as a GPS device for free. It uses the same data base that Garmin and Tom Tom use. I would think in a couple of years the "modern day" GPS units will become ALMOST obsolete. They will be replaced by the smart phones, the same way laptops are largely being replaced by tablets.

We purchased the original from Walmart and a newer upgrade a year or two later. Accompanied with a book called "The Next Exit" we couldn't go wrong. It sure beat using the truckers map while driving!

I have one in the garage. Bought it for my parents. When they passed, I kept it. Mom loved it and thanked me over and over again for it. They didn't have an RV, but they spent the last 30 years of their lives on the road. I blame them(lovingly) for my wanderlust!

I use to have over 30 of those in my tool box at work. Every body would stop and see me before going on vacation.

I would like to find one for Montana, from about 1950 or so. I would like to compare the route of U.S. Hwy 10 with the route of Interstate 90. In some areas it is the same, but not always.
that type of route comparison can't be done with a GPS.

I still have those too. along with a nice big USA map book with the various states. nice backup to have to verify the GPS directions! the other good maps are the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteers of the various states.

It probably worked better than my three Garmin's (gifts by the way). I have never seen so many bad routes as my Garmins give me.
