Check the laws of the state you register in. If you didn't pay sales tax in California most states will collect sales tax when you register in their state. I used the pub 52 rules for my previous MH all went well. Bought in Ca. Registered in Ca. Took delivery in a no sales tax state. Kept out of Ca. for requisite time. Kept receipts of food, fuel, RV parks, of our trip. No problems. Five years later Ca. questioned purchase and requested taxes be addressed. I send in all my documentation. They send a letter back saying thank you for the information, I had met the necessary, requirements, and my tax liability was zero. The MH I have now was bought in a non sales tax state. I had to pay the base state sales tax of the state I registered it in. No city, county or other "local" tax was imposed.
Just follow the rules and keep the proper documentation. Beware of the Montana LLC. Many states look at this as fraud a will go after you to collect. A close friend of mine did this. He had Montana attorneys, and all the proper and legal paperwork. Montana license plates....the whole 9 yards. His home state went after him, he lost they considered it a sham corporation set up to avoid taxes. Cost him many, many thousands of dollars.
