Anyone successfully towing 2019 or 2020 Jeep Cherokee?

Bought a new Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with active drive 2 a week ago. Brought it home. Decided to go grab a bite for dinner and drive the new car about 15 miles each way to one of our favorite spots. Wife was driving around 5 miles from home and a damned suicidal deer jumped out in front of her from the ditch. Screeeeech!! - Bam! Wiped out front of brand new car with 57 miles on it. Not a great day.

Car is in shop being repaired, but is only new once. We have never had a major collision or claim. This really sucks!

We have been towing our 2019 Lattitude Plus Cherokee now for a year without any problems. The 2019 does not neeed the wiring harness to prevent “death wobble” my local parts guy looked it up and it is no longer listed for 2019 Cherokee.

We love the car and find it easy to set up for towing and returning to normal operation. You must have a model with the Active II transfer case. Hard to find a model other than Trailhawk with the Active II, but we did. The Lattitude Plus is the lowest model that can have the Active II transfer case and it also comes with a V6 or 4 cylinder with turbo only.. do not be confused by the terminology “4WD” dealers routinely mix up all wheel drive and true 4 wheel drive as the same thing. They are not. Only true 4WD has a transfer case that can be shifted into neutral. That is what makes the car towable. By itself, the 9 speed tranny is not towable. You must have the Active II with the tiny button that shifts the transfer case into neutral. For us, the Active II was about a $1200 option, plus the v6 was another 2k or so.

The car should have an Active II badge on it and a tiny button to the right of the drive selector button.
The only glitch we have found is that one step in the book is wrong on how to set up the car for towing. It calls for the engine to be running, then shift into park. That causes the parking pawl in the tranny to clash. Simply reverse that, turn off engine first, then shift into park. This subject is well discusses in the Jeep Cherokee forum. I have been doing this for the past year and it works fine that way, no clash.

Other than that, buy the new Cherokee, it is a great car.

We looked at a new Cherokee Trailhawk. Height to center of base plate attachment point is 19". This is the same as what we now have on our 2000 Wrangler and would work fine. We were very impressed with the ride and handling of the Trailhawk. Wife thinks she would like it as a daily driver and it would work as a dinghy. We are thinking on it. Wife does not think she could live with a 4 door Wrangler as a daily driver. We will see what we decide to do. There are just a lot fewer options out there for us. Thanks for the replies. -- Mick

Have one setup for it but haven’t towed it yet, make sure you get adu2 transfer case and realize it’s really a front wheel drive car, take a look at jeep Cherokee club dot com they have a good forum there (. I’m towing a wrangler now)

The Cherokee trailhawk is the common one people tow, I have the elite leather and other options, road master tow brackets and the stay and play duo for braking

My research so far, indicates that any Cherokee with the 2 speed transfer case is towable. Looks like easiest to set up is the Trailhawk and that is the only model we have found in our area with the 2 speed transfer case.

Going to go look at the new Jeep Trailhawk. Will have to measure for tow point attachment off the ground and see if wife likes it for daily driver. The Wrangler Unlimited is the easiest to set up to tow, but wife really does not want it for daily driver. Just not many vehicles that would work for us in dual purpose roll and match up to our MH.

Just make sure it has the right PTU (T-case). Some don't come with a N position.
