- KD4UPLExplorer IIIf your hitch is rated for that much tongue weight without WDH then go for it. If the hitch isn't rated for that much but is rated for the overall tow weight I'd still do it for 35 miles if the truck wasn't squatting too much.
With a class 5 hitch you should be fine.
You may not ever need a WDH.
I have a Torklift super hitch on my dually that's good for 1,700 pounds without a WDH. I regularly pull my equipment trailer with a skid steer or excavator on it. Probalby around 13,000 pounds. I don't use a WDH, I don't need one.
