Anyone use a laser measure to measure height or clearance?

I'm purchasing a 13'2" toy hauler shortly, and I'm wondering about height of branches and clearances in campgrounds, low clearances etc. Wondering if there is a laser measure out there that would allow measurement from ground to a branch to see if I'd fit or not? Seems it would be awfully nice on those 'close' overpasses too where they might be marked at 13'6"...would be nice to ensure that asphalt layers and/or a mis-marked sign aren't an issue. Would this work?

  • lasers arent always accurate unless you spend $$$$ on them. the one I have for $50 wont do anything that is slightly rough like a popcorn ceiling or not parallel to the surface you are measuring from. tree branches are a no go. youd be better of with an inexpensive extension pole used for painting marked for your height.
  • That giraffe thing is pretty cool - though it is pricier. I might search out reviews of it and see what it's all about.

I'll def get up there and measure, probably before we leave the dealer on Friday (we have a 7 hour drive home with it).
  • First thing.......
Hookup that trailer to truck ready to go and then measure the actual height from highest point on rig (usually the top of A/C unit). Do not just go by brochure/published height.

Use a long straight board and tape measure. Then you will know what YOUR actual set up height is.

Don't have an experience with laser devices for measurement.......don't know if they would be accurate with tree branches etc.

I am a decent judge of heights/lengths and just eye ball it. IF in doubt GF gets out and YELLS. Otherwise I just close my eyes and hope for best outcome.

One time in upper NY State we were on a transit road that connected with a one way road just before an overpass. As we came around the curve I noticed signage at overpass 12' 8" but it looked like we would fit. Bur I stopped and was going to try to backup into an area off road to figure out what we were going to do.
Several vehicles were in line behind us so as I walked back to ask them to back up/go around/gives us room a guy in a truck shouted out "Sign is wrong.....you'll be OK". He assured me that we would fit.
So I proceeded expecting to hear the crunch. Made it with inches to spare.
Guy pulled up alongside and said that the roadbed at been reworked a couple years ago and sign had never been changed.

My eye ball was right....but sign caused me to doubt.

Here are a few hand held laser distance measuring devices. A bit pricey but I guess cheaper than A/C replacement/roof repairs.

  • I climb the rear ladder and eyeball it.

Did find a RailRoad overpass marked 13 ft which is enough for my 5th wheel to clear. Something didn't feel right so I stopped short of the bridge, got up on the ladder and sure enough there was a steel girder and a pipe hanging down low enough it would have taken out my A/C unit. Upon closer inspection it looked like a truck had hit the bridge and knocked the girder loose. The pipe was for a light that also had been knocked loose.
  • Where could I buy one? Seems like it would be nice to have at least *some* reassurance of what the height is. Would be useful for measuring width too.
  • I use a retrachable measurering stick, the truckers use, when I can
