I have used DE with limited success. I experimented with it once by making a circle of DE around the perimeter of the ant nest. Ants would walk across the DE with no effect that I could see, the nest didn't seem to be effected after weeks of application. This was the food grade DE.

If the DE gets wet then I think it loses all value for insect control.

As a kid on the farm operating the feed mill we added dried molasses to the feed mix. I imagine it must be the same stuff.
