- az99ExplorerThere is also a big water park in Old Forge which is in the central Adirondacks west of Lake George. It is a lot less touristy area than Lake George but still very busy in the summer.
Like someone else said, the Adirondack area has really changed over the years but it is still the best area to visit.

I was actually born in Saranac Lake and grew up near Lake Placid. I've seen the best of the Adirondacks, before the area became the more commercialized enterprise it is today... I was climbing the High Peaks before I could walk - carried in a backpack by my Mom.
I truly love the area, but so much of it now is hard to recognize compared to when I moved away in 1992. - Doug33ExplorerThere are a million things to do in the Lake George/Adirondack area. - resmasExplorerLooked at their website... It would cost OVER $1000 for my family of 5 to spend 2 NIGHTS (a fall weekend) with them. It darn well better be more impressive than Disney! Ouch!
- longislandcampeExplorerThanks for the help everyone but it appears no one got the correct place. You see, when you hear something from a friend of a friend some details get lost in translation. :-)
I finally heard back from my sister's ex student and the place that was better then Disney was Ridin Hy Ranch near Lake George. - resmasExplorer

My sisters student said the attraction near the Lake George RV Park was better then Disney. What might that be?
The 1st person to respond to your original post gave you the answer - Great Escape. It is now a Six Flags park, but used to be a privately owned park, years ago.
Not sure that it can be on the same level as Disney, though. That's pushing it. It is a pretty good park considering the location - it's not near any major city... - mdcampingExplorerBetter than Disney....? :h
