Audio books

We drive for up to 13 hours across the USA to get from point A to B each year. We have made this trip many, many times. To take the hum drum out of traveling at 65MPH we sometimes turn to audio books for a distraction.
Our most favorite so far was the Harry Potter series. The speaker was outstanding. The English was understandable and even toned. The entire experience took many trips to complete and was rewarded with us watching the movie version after doing the books.

Do you have such a great series that kept you going? We don't have children with us so there is no topic that we cannot address.

TIA Tom
  • Why my phone scrambles chapters of downloaded books from CD, I don't know. Gets annoying and confusing. I gave in and got a subscription to Audible. It's not free, but it's also no hassle. I don't have to stream it either. I download a few books before we leave. Mostly it's stupid stuff like comedians, so it adds some interesting noise to a drive, but can be mentally tuned out as well.
  • Hi,

How do you folks get the files? Last I listened to a non Itune audiobook it was on cd's. Logged into the local library and started an overdrive mp3 download 90 minutes ago and it's finally made it to the last of 11 sections. Can't see sitting at a Starpukes waiting for a new book when it takes this long. Something like 300mb.

  • I don't know how my buddy got them but, I have a 120 gig drive full of audio books. their made from disks and cassettes. They play continuous on usb drives without touching a thing and the digital player keeps up with where you are when you turn off and back on.

I transfer several to usb drives for trips.
  • Old time radio is a wonderful resource. I have an adapter that allows me to broadcast it to my fm radio.

I'd prefer to stream the books rather than down load them.

One of my favorite series is Nero Wolfe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_Wolfe

Perhaps everyone who contributes to this thread could share their favorite (and possibly free) urls?
  • Audio books don't do it for me. Sure, I can listen to them, but they soon just become background noise, and I loose my concentration. Next thing I know, I have no idea about the contents of the book.

I prefer silence while driving, and concentrate on my and mostly other's driving while immersing myself in my own thoughts.
  • We really enjoyed listening to "Pillars of the Earth". Great book for a long trip.
  • We have several old time radio programs from Radio Archives. We like the 50's detective programs.
  • Watch out for some of WEB Griffen's audio novels. The last one I listened to several years ago was either 11 or 13 discs long. So, you say what's wrong with that, we have a 13 hour trip? Well let me tell you, he could take a half hour to describe the inside of a restaurant where a meeting was to be held. The advance button on my player just about wore out before I finished with that book.

  • We have enjoyed Tony Hillerman and John Grisham audio books.

Looking to buy the entire Clive Cusler (sic) series as I love his books.
