I have a Reese manual slide and a 6.5 bed. I have never needed the slide. I have a 20 inch hitch extension on the pin box. That, functionally, moves my 5ers front edge back 14 inches further from the cab. That is the same distance my slider would move it if I used it instead.
I have passed 60 degrees with no cab contact. You will need to check with your manufacturer to see if a pin extension will work for your particular 5er, if you go that route.
A pin extension has no maintenance, but you do need to occasionally check to see that the bolts are still tight.
