I made the change from manual slide to Superlide and am glad I did. I too was concerned about the perceived maintenance of using it. What I do is the day I am going to hook up is to spray the slide tubes with Slipplate then when backing to hook up, I'll get the pin about 6 inches from the hitch head, get out and spray the hitch plate with Wd40, then finishing connecting. A small price to pay for one of the best hitches. The downside is the spraying to connect, the good side, it does let you keep a better eye on your most important part of towing your 5er.
