Axle nut retainers

I thought I would try the spring cage axle nut retatiners on this bearing/seal job. Never liked the bend over tab style, the tab always wants to get caught in the nut threads making the job difficult and introducing the possibility of small slivers of metal cleaving off inside the hub.

So, I ponied up the $4 per and bought four of them. Today I found out I didn't care for them much either! I slipped the first one over the nut and realized it didn't come anywhere near clamping down on the rear edge of the nut. Is the tension sufficient to hold them in place like that, or are there longer ones which go the whole way back the nut surface? I could pretty easily remove the cage with my finger tips and can envision it working it's way off the front of the nut (and you know what follows). Do they actually hold?
  • Moss,

Do you mean this kind of retaining clip?

I never had one loosen up. That was my older smaller camper. My current one I has the slotted nut and cotter pin. Old school, yes but I like it!

If I had a choice, I would take the cotter pin all the time.
  • I think you need all the correct parts.

    For example:
    (2) "D" Washer (005-023-00)
    (2) Spindle Nut Retainer (006-190-00)
    (2) Hex Jam Nut (006-191-00)
    (1) Instruction Sheet (059-781-00)

    X2

Slotted castle nut or cover and a cotter pin is safe and secure.

Yep, that be the ones. I like castle and cotter too. You know it isn't going anywhere.

If you are trying to use the retainer with the nut meant for a cotter pin, it won't fit. You can't just mix and match parts.
