I'm with you on not jumping onto the solar bandwagon just because so many are already doing so.
Most of the solar that RV folks talk about is the permanent installation type that requires punching holes in an RV roof already full of holes ... which always introduces some leak liability. Other stuff on the roof that occasionally requires service access is also more difficult to get at if solar panels are up there. If we ever added "solar" it would be portable foldup panels that we keep in a cabinet and lay out in the sun while the RV is in the shade.
We use a small very quiet gas sipping 650 watt Honda generator to charge up our batteries about every 3rd day. I'd recommend a 1000 watt Honda inverter generator for your RV first - you can always add (portable) solar panels later if you wish. You should always have a small generator along anyway for backup because weather is becoming unpredictable, worldwide .... so get the generator first.
