Background investigation

Welcome back to world of wasteful gov... Twelve years as a seasonal Ranger, 12 sets of prints and expensive $$$ investigations for a Vet with a Secret also. Talked football with the last investigator who got $600 plus mileage for our two hour visit. :( :(

I'm in my application process for similar volunteer opportunity (US Army Corps of Engineers/Benbrook Lake, TX) and haven't given fingerprints yet (still residing in Michigan), but signed consent forms for extensive background checks. It's my very first volunteer opportunity ... 8 years Navy ... 100% Service Connected Disabled Vet here, ... even retired from Federal Employment (VA), too.

I'm not registered with any state's sex offender list YET (just kidding of course); however, I did have a couple indiscretions (DUIs early 2000 & 2001) that will probably show up. I'm hoping that doesn't throw a wrench in the process.

If anyone knows how "extensive" and how "horrible of a person" one has to be to be denied ... feel free to comment.

Don't know how horrible you have to be, but we also were required to have background checks to volunteer with the US Forest Service. No fingerprints required though.

We've had background checks at all volunteer positions we applied for, 8 in all state 2, and 5 federal 3 different agencies. No fingerprints yet. I may have a parking ticket outstanding from 20+ years ago?

Yes, you have to submit fingerprints for volunteer positions just about anywhere. A few years ago the American Red Cross required credit checks and mode of living checks of amateur radio operators that volunteered for communications support. They backed off eventually, just a credit check. I just had to submit fingerprints again for a handgun permit. I am a retired military man, and served on general officer's staff and was cleared for Secret access.

Think of this though, would you want a convicted child molester as a camp host? Someone who distributes illicit drugs?

If it troubles you, you could volunteer elsewhere.

You would cringe at some of the people who apply for these positions. We have been asked numerous times how to apply by "campers" who are known drug dealers, ex cons, etc..... BUT.......we told them how and notified our supervisors.......let them do the eliminating :E

Didn't think of this before, but we are working for a concessionaire this season in a forest service park. We were not required to have background checks. How does this concessionaire know they haven't hired criminals of any kind as managers of their parks? I think the checks are a good thing.

Well...we asked them to send the background check packet to us so we can get started on it. I guess the world we live in dictates such necessary craziness! It's a shame,

I really believe this to be a great idea as people who work for the public. The public should feel safe when they are around strangers they don't even know.

I just fill them out and send them back. If they're already reading my email what do I care?
