Backing up made easy

2016 F150 with back up assist

Backing Up and Parking a Trailer Easier Than Ever
May-21-2015 12:00 AM ET

DEARBORN, Mich., – Ford, America’s truck leader, pioneers towing innovation again by introducing Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ for the 2016 Ford F-150 – a segment-first technology that makes the challenge of backing up a trailer easier than ever for both experts and infrequent towers alike.

Backing up a trailer can be tricky. The truck’s front wheels have to be turned the opposite direction the customer wants the trailer to go. Turn too hard and the trailer can hit the vehicle, or jackknife. Whether working alone or with a spotter, backing up a trailer can be a tension-filled ordeal.

Pro Trailer Backup Assist helps take the frustration out of backing up. It works by letting the customer steer the trailer with a control knob while the truck steers its wheels and limits vehicle speed.

  • I love technology but I want to back my own trailer. And I too enjoy it but I'm fortunate that I was taught to back a trailer before I had a driver's license so I don't remember not being able to back up and have no reason to get nervous.

I learned to parallel park in college when the parking spots were tight and being able to parallel park often saved you a half mile walk in the rain. Necessity always results in a motivated student.
  • SOoooooooo. While the driver is watching a monitor, who is watching the front end of the truck to make sure it doesn't go into a ditch :h
Am I the only one seeing a lot more trucks with damaged front ends because of this :S

Tractor trailers with automatic transmissions, and now this...the wussification of the modern metro-sexual male is in full swing. Real men must take a stance----arrr arrrr arrrrr arrrrr arrrrhhhhh

I grew up backing up tandem hay wagons; it didn't always work, but as a teenager, it was sure fun trying! :C

Amazing...technology is turning us into wimps.

I grew up believing that if you can't back it you shouldn't be pulling it.

Exactly why I went with a MH. I love watching newbies back a tt, FW, or pop up into a tight spot. I'd try to help them but it would ruin the fun. Plus I would not be much help anyway.

I can back up a trailer in my sleep. 20ish years pulling boats where it got launched several times a week...

Guy I bought my Travel Trailer from offered to deliver it after we discovered a title issue that had to be cleared up. I'm telling him where to put it in my drive way. He's struggling to get the trailer correctly orientated. I'm facing backwards and tell him to turn the wheel in the wrong direction. I was so used to facing forward and instinctively knew which way to turn the wheel, never dawned me standing there that I had to reverse my directions :)

IDK, this technology would do nothing for me, but maybe the wife could use it to back up.

We have parallel parking feature on her car. It's freaking amazing to watch it work. I can also parallel park with no issues and would not let my daughters take their driving test until they could parallel park. My oldest was so impressive, that the testing person and i both walked around the car looking at the absolute perfection... but i digress :) That feature does work well.

  • Maybe I'm the odd man out, but I love the challenge of backing my 42' fiver up. Its a great feeling to get the trailer into its spot especially when its tight or I am going it alone. Really feels good when you back in the first time and hit your mark. I am man hear me roar. :B
  • Maryland just dropped the parallel parking requirement for the driver's test.
    bumpy
  • Ditto...and remember when high schools had a mandatory drivers ed course and had
to pass it in order to graduate...along with passing the swimming test...

Parallel parking was the dreaded test for over half of the class. Mostly the
gals, but guys mixed in there too...we thought of them as wimps...
