Battery corrosion

I have 2 6V battery's in my MH. they are hooked up to solar panels on the roof I'm also hooked to shore power. About evert 5 or 6 weeks I have to clean the green corrosion off the battery connections. Is this normal? If not what can I do to fix the problem? Thanks for your help. Also I always check to make sure the water level is good.

Yup, If the battery's are being maintained correctly this should not be happening. It was more common in the old days before better battery maintainers.

More info needed. You have solar panels but, you are also hooked to shore power?? What type of shore power controller do you have? What type of solar panel controller do you have?

Do a lot of research on the internet to learn this sore of thing. It's not easy. I don't understand a lot of it myself.

I use dielectric grease on all terminals on all vehicles and never have a problem.
  • Baking soda and water mixture will neutralize acid corrosion and clean as well. After cleaning, use battery terminal protectant from auto parts store.
  • Teflon may not be the best choice.
I use standard electric de-ox compound.
You should check other connections. Check the ground connection to the frame.
Inspect the crimp connectors. There could be corrosion inside the crimps.
  • Coat the connectors and place an untreated penny underneath the connector, next to the battery terminal. The penny will act as a sacrificial anode.
  • There is a seal around the battery posts. Any rough treatment of the post can damage the seal and it will leak forever - there's not much you can do.
  • Yes to both of your questions and I sprayed Teflon on the terminals this time
  • No, that is not normal.
    Green is commonly copper corrosion.
Are you disconnecting cleaning the terminals good and applying anti-corrosion electrical grease to the connections?
Does your solar panel have a good regulator?
