I am towing a 31 ft travel trailer. Loaded it is about 9500 lbs. I do have a WDH. They are bent so badly I have had to knock the pins out with a steel rod with a hammer.
Hi Camper117,
If your bending the 5/8 pin and using a WD hitch, something is not right that is for sure.
Questions:
Do you know your loaded tongue weight?
What size WD bars are you using?
I am towing 9,950 with a 1,600# TW but I am using a 2 1/2" shank and 1,700# WD bars. I have never had it bend or hint of bending. I am using a Reese Tow Beat (now Titan) Receiver and Reese WD hitch parts.
However... I also have the Reese 2 1/2" to 2" adapter sleeve. On mine there is a derated sticker on the sleeve that states 1,200# TW max. Means I'm not suppose to tow over 1,200# TW and 12,000 pull rating when using the sleeve in a 1,700# TW, 14,000# pull rated receiver.
I never understood why the sleeve would de-rate the TW or pull rating however you may have just found out why.
It is hard to understand why the 1/4" distance is going to affect this, this much but from some reason they de-rated my adapter.
Is there a sticker on your adapter? What does it state as the rating?
I'll throw out a caution on using the grade 8 bolt, normally I would not have an issue with this but the adapter is in the middle of the mix. If you bend that grade 8 5/8 bolt, it might be a real bear getting it out. Be thinking on how to get a real long sawzall blade down in there.
I agree, ditch the adapter and get a 2 1/2" shank. What brand WD hitch do you have?
