If you are talking the original settlers, there was nothing to assimilate to. If you are talking during the industrial revolution, they assimilated very nicely. They learned English, adopted American values and blended in very nicely. So yes, just like them.
To quote the former governor of Louisiana Bobby Jindal (born of immigrants) "Immigration without assimilation is infiltration".
