Sorry the OP had to go through what he did. A complete nightmare by all accounts.

Through the years I've been forced to be more cautious, less trusting, and, regrettably, more cynical. When anyone I don't know, approaches me, unsolicited, with any offer for "assistance or help"---especially if it involves money in any shape, fashion, or form, my internal scam detector screams red-alert. This is SOP for me.
