How do campers with bicycles protect them from thieves? The CG we are in has had four bikes stolen this Summer. A good, thick chain with lock doesn't seem to work. Thanks for all ideas. Betsy.
A thick chain is the best. Nothing will stop an electric grinder but a chain will make it more difficult because the links move around. We always stay at commercial campgrounds, mostly in the Midwest, and have never had anything stolen and we take our bikes everywhere. Maybe nobody wants heavy electric bikes. Let us know what campground had the bikes stolen so we can avoid it.
Well my method is simple. Bike was purchased before my Daughter got her driver's license.. She's fast approaching her 40th Birthday
Campground I stay at a few years back put up a whole bunch of signs 'This Area Under Video Surveillance."
So I'm walking past the manager's office. Inside are a Grandpa, Grandson and the assistant manager watching the computer screen......
Grandson was looking very Contrite Grandpa was NOT looking happy
The video I could not see but am told he (the boy) Was stealing bicycles dead center in the frame of one of the cameras not 100 feet from one of the signs.
There is (now) a new bicycle accessory you can attach.... GPS tracker.
1. Keep the good bikes at home. Anyone who knows what they are looking at will move right on by my old junkers and take the sweet ride next door.
2. Lock them up. Keep the honest folks honest. I just use a cable lock around something permanent. But if I were in a theft heavy environment like it seems you are, I'd go with a heavy duty chain and good padlock in addition to the cable lock. Make the thief move on to an easier target.
Oh another on subject line if not on topic comment.
When I was in elementary school they taught us "Bicycle safety" (Riding safely) one of the things they taught us is to ride opposite traffic.
Turns out in my state that's against the law. The Michigan Vehicle Code says bicycles are to be operated on the RIGHT side. Same as a car, motorcycle or semi truck. Who'd a thun it.. (I sure did not I was researching the bicycle page of the Michigan Vehicle Code for OTHER reasons) you also have to obey all Stop, Yeild and Speed limit signs and signals YOU can ride the wrong way on a one way if you ride on the sidewalk (speed limit varies from city to city) and you can make an otherwise Illegal LEFT turn if you WALK the bike through the turn (I always road across then up onto the sidewalk right around the walk/don't walk and on to where I was going)
We have a truck camper on an F250 Supercab. I bought two Blix Vika+ folding, electric bikes. When not in use, they reside behind the front seats. I removed the folding rear seat and seat back. Plenty of room and very secure storage.
