I'm sorry to hear of your loss. And you are right, such things happen everywhere these days, ever since we gave up the death penalty for horse thieving.
I went to college in a town where 10 year old kids routinely walked the streets carrying bolt cutters for this very purpose. So I feel your pain, having lost a couple bikes to 'em over the years. But short of sitting out in the moonlight with a shotgun loaded with rock salt, what can you do? Maybe lock the bike INSIDE your rig where it is just damn inconvenient in case YOU have to get out, say, in a fire.
(You can't kill 'em, however much you might like to, since bike theft doesn't threaten your own life directly -- but you sure can make 'em wish they were dead with a butt full of rock salt.)
