Big gust of wind pushes TT and Truck

Just got back from a 4000 mile trip towing our 35 foot travel trailer with a 2500 HD truck. Driving down a desolate road outside Limon CO going abut 55 MPH through a wind farm(posted speed limit 65 and was a bit windy) and I see all this dirt and weeds blow by in front of me and a 1/2 second later the truck and trailer get hit with a huge gust of wind that instantly shove the truck and trailer about 3 feet over. I could feel the trailer drag the truck over and tell the were no longer tracking together but by the time I slowed down it was all back inline. Everyone in the truck new something was not normal. We tow with a Propride hitch so i'm thinking that helped with the situation but after that it was white knuckle for a few days and when ever I would see wind farms. Just curious if any of you have ever experienced anything like this. It happened once before in SD to me but was not nearly as bad.
  • I was driving over the Key Bridge on I-695 in east Baltimore in my car earlier this year... a low profile Ford Taurus. Wind was pushing me HARD to the right, I had to steer INTO the wind to keep straight. Then the wind suddenly stopped and I almost hit the guard rail. I was glad to only be in a lo-pro car and not towing my trailer that day!!!
  • We get lots of wind in our neck of the woods making it mandatory to have a high quality WD/SC hitch installed and properly dialed in. Although many of our trips involve using interstates to get anywhere we just go slower when the wind is up and roaring. Have had many instances where wind has pushed us around a bit but not to the extent you are describing, thankfully our Chevy HD 3/4 ton TV has been reliably hauling our 33' 10K# TT all over the four corner states for the last decade even under less than desirable weather conditions.

We monitor weather conditions and get an early start since winds tend to get more severe in the afternoon and early evening hours in our region of the country. Although our current set-up is pretty solid going down the highway, we find it better to not test Mother Nature and if at all possible avoid towing in overly windy conditions. Obviously pulling a 12' high, 8.5' wide box down the highway is not an easy task, windy conditions while underway certainly dictates a slower paced towing agenda to keep towing combination firmly on the road ahead.
  • Had a wind gust move us over a full lane with our previous trailer/tow vehicle. It is one of the reasons we upgraded tow vehicle.
  • Probably a dust devil. One hit us once and moved the motor home from one lane to the other. They are like mini tornados. I doubt the wind farm had anything to do with it. Lots of them in the southwest. If I see a dust devil forming or approaching I slow down and grip the wheel
  • A friend lost his truck and 5er up near there couple years ago. His rolled completly over along with several semi's.
  • Had that happen to me. I did see the dust and stuff blowing across the freeway ahead. I slowed way down to 35-40 to help. Also with full tanks that helped a lot.
