Cover the outside so he can't see his reflection.

A few years ago we had a cardinal that would sit on the edge of my Suburban outside mirror and peck away at it. Didn't do any damage, but the saliva (or whatever it was) was sticky and had to be cleaned off repeatedly. Nothing short of killing it (I didn't want to do that) would stop it except for covering up the mirror when not in use.
As others have said, he is seeing his reflection in the mirror. A friend who has a bird hobby said that it was mating season and the bird saw the reflection as another male that was a competitor. So the bird is "fighting" him to chase him away. Don't know how true this is but it seems to fit the scenario.
