You could also put a super charger on your current truck, and get the same benefit as having a turbo diesel. Then at least you have the same sea level HP to around 10K feet also. I doubt you will be much over 45-50 mph tho with either option.
Otherwise, what happened to you is pretty normal with any natural aspirated motor. If you do not travel at these higher elevations much. Do not worry about it. If you do, worry about it, and do something.
I usually have more issues at slow speed on city and county roads in the 20+% range, where literally, I run out of gears, torque multiplication, and stall out on the hill! If in your case, still moving on a 6% grade, have a gear or two to go down, no worries. Not going forward, having to back down a grade like I am describing. THAT is a worry, and not fun!

Those elevations are nothing....I was guessing you were at 6000 ft or more.

Blt2ski, sounds like some low elevations, makes me think of the West side of Hy26 10 miles east of Seaside, OR 1,600' and Santiam Pass between Salem and Bend, OR (East side)4,800' no issues pulling those with 11,000# 19,500# GCVW, yes both have passing lanes, but I sure would not want to be going 25 on either road even in the right lane.
Sorry just my opinion that one should be able to hold a decent speed up hill.
