Black Tank Chemicals for High Temperatures

I have used RV-Trine Extreme Temperature solution for my black tank for many years. The product has been discontinued. I liked it because when traveling in hot weather, I felt that it was better for odor control than other products. After getting back to Florida in August, one treatment would keep the tank odor free until we used the RV again next spring/summer.

With this product no longer available, what would you recommend for my application? There are so many products to choose from that it's hard to decide which one would be best.
  • I'm relatively new to the RV world, so I haven't seen everything yet, but I never have a smell in my trailer even if sitting in hot weather. I use the GEO method while traveling, and when it's sitting for a month or more I use one of the enzyme products to break everything down. Sometimes when I was out of products, I just use plenty of water, and never had issues.

Is the smell all the time? Or just when you flush? If the smell is all the time, then there's something wrong. Between the vent and the toilet seal (with water), I can't see how a smell can get in the trailer unless there is an issue with one of the above.
  • When we are traveling, I empty the tank weekly. Since the sensors don't work, weekly seems to be fine for the 2 of us. All I can tell you is that when I tried to use just 2 ozs for a week, an odor would develop. With 4 ozs the week was fine. When traveling, I flush the tank regularly letting the flush go until the water is almost clear.

I plan to buy something and would really appreciate product recommendations. If you are happy with just using water. I'm not comfortable with that. We have been doing this since 2001 and have always used some sort of chemical.

No disrespect intended, but I gotta ask....why did you use that treatment in the first place? Did you have odors previously? Did you drain and flush your tank often (once or twice a week)? Have you tried just using water...lots of water? Have you ever used a laundry detergent in your tank with several gallons of water when traveling?

Would appreciate answers to the above question. With answers, I do believe we could help you more.

    Good luck

  • Try using a decent amount of water and flushing tank after a dump - 4 years full-time and no odor. If you have odor - something is wrong.
  • I've been using Happy Campers for about a year and am really pleased with the way it works. I haven't had any odor problems while using it and it really helps break everything down and works well with the Sewer Solution which I've been using for the first time during a two week trip that we're just wrapping up.

I did use it to treat our black tank last fall when I prepped the trailer for storage, and I didn't notice any black tank odor when we got it out of storage for our trip. But, in Ohio, the temps during November-March aren't exactly as warm as in Florida.
