Basically, water dissolves the waste and the chemical attempts to deoderize the act of water dissolving the waste. More water usually works better than most anything else. We have not used chemicals for 30 or so years not. We just put a cup of calgon water softener and one cup of cheap liquid laundry detergent in the tanks and that does the job with the water added. Remember these tanks are "holding" tanks, not "septic" tanks. With a black tank full or nearly full, most everything will wash down the drain when you dump and rinse. Just takes a little getting used to how it all works.
