Black tank flush - valves always open?

The label next to the inlet for our black tank flush says that the drain should always be open for flushing. Why is this? Is this really a concern, or is this just there to make sure somebody doesn't leave them closed and end up flooding their camper? I originally thought I could use this same inlet, after flushing, to add some water into the tank, but this tells me I shouldn't.

Thoughts?

  • I have to agree, the only way out for the water is up and out the vent tube if it gets too full. Now that may be a mess but I see no way it will flood the inside of the RV unless the toilet flapper is not seated.
  • I am a bit confused. The black tank has at least one vent. The toilet has a flapper that is sealed. If it were not sealed, waste odor would be in your RV. How could you flood the inside of your RV with black tank waste?

With the gray tank, the "P" traps only have a water seal. You can flood your TC with gray tank waste.

  • It's exactly as you say, they don't want you to flood your rig with sewage. I've read about it happening here on the forum several times.

My opinion is it is a two fold issue. One being the one you mentioned about flooding and the other is to prevent a buildup of pressure in the tank. Theoretically if the vent pipe would get plugged with refuse it would be possible to over pressurize the tank until it burst. Whether this could actually happen or not I don't know and I do NOT want to find out. However what I do is pull the black tank valve and then turn on the flusher water. I let the flusher work for about 10 minutes and then I close the valve and let the flusher water run for 5 more minutes and then open the valve again. This helps to get the residue out of the bottom of the tank. I have not had an issue doing it this way. My guess is as long as you don't let it run for an extended period of time you will probably be Ok. I am assuming that you have a 40 gallon black tank. If not you may have to adjust some of my comments to your situation. I do not use the flusher to add water to my tank. My toilet will hold about a gallon of water when I fill it to the water outlet. I do this a couple of times, putting my chemicals in between fills, and call it good for another week. YMMV
  • There have been quite a few on here that have left that closed while flushing and got distracted and flooded their campers. I believe a lot of it with the label is one of those attorney things
