Black water cable broken

Our black water cable broke and now we are having trouble finding someone who will fix it without emptying the tank. We can't figure out how to empty the tank since the cable is broken. The cable looks as if it frayed out. We pull the handle and it just slides in and out without anything happening. Any suggestions on how to empty the tank without a cable connection? We have to get it emptied before we can get the cable fixed. thanks

  • Cable is frayed so it sounds like the cable has come completely detached from valve.

You need to gain access to the valve.....if you have an enclosed underbelly then you can remove a panel OR cut a three side window (non-cut side towards front of rig) so that you can get to the valve. Then you will see IF you have any options of reattaching cable, replacing cable or if you will have to replace the valve assembly.

Then IF you have to replace valve assembly you will need to empty tank....either a septic pump company or pry valve open via stem at a dump site (pliers, screwdriver, hack saw---whatever it takes to get at valve stem so you can force it open)
  • Like the other two said; service center should be able to handle it.

I don't know why you have to dump it first. You shouldn't have to change the valve only the cable. The cable attaches to valve. May not even need a new cable, it's very possible that the cable housing has just come loose where it is attached near the valve. A very common problem. If you aren't sure how to fix this call a local dealer. I'm sure they've done this dozens of times. Not that expensive.

  • Depending on whether there are any kinks in your toilet drop, you might call some of the local septic tank cleaners and see if they can put a hose down your toilet. I would think if that works, then fill it back up with water and repeat a few times.. it won't be perfect, but it will be a lot better than it was. Once you get it emptied the last time, park with the valve higher than the rest of the tank and you should have no problem.
  • I had the sheath come lose on mine, right at the handle. I pulled a small amount of the underbelly down and could see the whole cable "bow" when the handle was pulled or pushed. I got a short piece of metal (actually one of those saw toothed picture holders) and put small hose clamps on it to secure it to the handle and to the sheath. It's been working fine since last April.

Maybe yours is the same failure as mine. If so, this fix seems to work.

  • Nick, Unless you have a little bit of cable sticking out to grab hold of possibly with pliers, you will have to go to the valve itself. If you have an enclosed underbelly of the rig then it might be a bit more difficult without cutting the underbelly to gain access. Good Luck and hopefully someone may have a magical solution for you.
