Blue Ox baseplate

I have a Blue Ox baseplate with the removeable tabs, which I like to remove when I get to my destination. What can I use to fill/cover the holes to prevent rust. The nice black coating gets rusty so fast on the Oregon Coast, for example. No problem in AZ though :)

Thanks all. I'll check olddog49's suggestion and if that doesn't work for me I'll call Blue Ox and ask about those plastic things.

olddog40...Does that hitch ball cover come in different sizes? Should I get a 2" size or what?

I do spray WD40 on the base plate holes several times while I am on the coast.

2 inch is what I use

  • They make a plastic cover for ball hitch type. Slides over the ball. Works well, slide it over the openings on the base plate. I too, have the same set up. Might need a shot of WD40. Been using them over a year now. Get them from an auto part store or walmart.
  • X2. Black spray paint. The plastic tabs.....I have to wrap electrical tape around them so they won't fall out. And....contacting the manufacturer of these tabs, I found they make BLACK ones ONLY for Blue Ox. All the others are red. However...they did send me 6 black ones (free, too!) to keep me happy.
((If I remember correctly, after losing 2 or 3 of these tabs I contacted BLUEOX to get more...they referred me to the company that makes them.))
  • Our Blue Ox base plate came with plastic plugs that fit in the holes when the tabs are removed. Held by friction.
A couple of times a year, I touch up the rust with black rust paint, and before our winter, spray with a rust proofing oil.
